Thesis in Psychology

Alexithymia, emotional intelligence, and their association to word usage in expressive writing

My undergraduate thesis in psychology performed new research to discover how people’s levels of emotional understanding relate to the way they write about their emotions. Expressing one’s emotions verbally has been found to reduce stress and improve health; this study further specified this activity’s effectiveness. Over 50 people participated in a study I designed by writing about emotional experiences, and I used word coding software to analyze what they wrote. I found that people with different levels of emotional understanding do tend to choose different types of words.
